Corinthians 13:7 – "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
A Story of Pain and Loss
We recently had a guest speaker at our church. After being introduced by our pastor, he came onto the stage dressed in a full prison uniform. He proceeded to share the most harrowing story anyone living in the first world can imagine.
Several years ago, he found his younger brother dead. Murdered, in fact. He and his brother were very close. This experience alone would leave many traumatized for a lifetime. But the story only began there.
The Unthinkable : Wrongfully Convicted
He was subsequently arrested for the crime of murdering his own brother. He was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
He was, in fact, innocent of this crime.
Two months into his life-sentence he received a cold, rather businesslike phone call from his wife. She informed him she had filed for divorce. They had two very young children together. She said he would never see them again.
Redemption and Exoneration
After serving eight years of his sentence, he was exonerated and set free. As it turned out, his best friend had murdered his brother and let him do the time for it.
Upon his release, there was no reunion with fanfare and family awaiting him. He was unable to find the whereabouts of his children for another year. When he finally saw them, they regarded him as little more than a total stranger.
From Anger to Love
One might think that this man’s experiences would leave him embittered and angry for life. Quite the contrary, his story was one of love. His experience was all worth it to him because he found his love of God. Furthermore, his knowledge of God’s love for him overcame the intense pain and sorrow he endured for years.
Viktor Frankl’s Wisdom on Endurance
This message of God’s love may not resonate for some who are not ready to accept a divine meaning to life. So, consider this:
The famous psychologist Viktor Frankl was a survivor of four concentration camps during the Holocaust. Frankl was in a unique position to observe the behavior of his fellow inmates, as he served as the medical doctor in these camps.
Based on his experiences, Frankl became aware of something important. In fact, he considered the profound insight he observed about human beings so important he went on to write the book “Man’s Search for Meaning”. He also founded Logotherapy, a school of psychotherapy and part of Existential and Humanistic psychology.
The Meaning of Endurance in Life
And what was the wisdom Viktor Frankl had to share with the world based on his experiences? Simply this:
The people who survive even the most horrific experiences known to mankind are not the strongest; the most intelligent; the most successful; the cleverest.
The people who not only survive, but can go on to thrive, are the ones who can maintain a deep sense of meaning and purpose in life. Just as the speaker at our church did.
What Does "Endure" Really Mean?
Going back to the word “endure” in Corinthians 13:7. Some may ask what that word even means exactly?
It means a love that can persevere through even the worst trials and tribulations, demonstrating a resilience and unbreakable will.
The Power of Love
So, can love endure all things?
It truly can for those who know how and where to find a love so sublime and magnificent.
